AI Impact: Freelancers Face Job and Earnings Decline Since ChatGPT Launch

Published November 11, 2023

The advent of advanced generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has inevitably led to shifts in employment landscapes, especially in freelancing domains. The escalation in AI capabilities raises concerns over the job security of freelancers, who have, according to several recent studies, been experiencing a decline in both job opportunities and income since the introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT.

AI's Disruptive Influence on Freelancer Livelihoods

In a study by OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania, there's a clear indication that higher-paying jobs are more susceptible to the disruptions caused by AI, with individuals in six-figure salary brackets being three times more vulnerable than those making $30,000 or less. This highlights a stark reality that higher earnings do not shield professionals from the advancements of AI automation.

Adding to the conversation, a separate study analyzed the effects on freelancers post ChatGPT's emergence. Data from online gig platforms, such as Upwork, was scrutinized from January 2022 to April 2023, revealing a tangible decline in the number of freelancing jobs and incomes, particularly for those in fields like copywriting and graphic design. This descent is attributed to the abilities of generative AI to replicate or enhance tasks typically completed by freelancers, thereby affecting the demand for human-powered freelance work and impacting wage structures in the process.

Divergent Paths: AI's Mixed Consequences

Whilst the future may look daunting for some, studies from institutions like Harvard Business School offer a different perspective. Assessing the impact of GPT-4 usage among Boston Consulting Group employees, findings showcased a significant boost in productivity; tasks were completed quicker and with greater quality when AI tools were utilized. Notably, it was the less skilled workers who benefited the most, as AI shines in compiling and disseminating easily accessible information.

Two archetype groups of workers using AI have emerged from this scenario. 'Cyborgs' fuse AI and human capabilities by fine-tuning AI responses for more nuanced tasks, while 'Centaurs' strategically assign AI-suitable tasks and concentrate on areas that demand human expertise. This symbiotic approach potentially paves the way for a new model of work where AI serves as a complement rather than a replacement of human endeavour.

In summary, the dual-edged sword of AI in freelancing underscores the transformative effects of AI on the labor market. As generative AI becomes more integrated into professional settings, the balance between job displacement and augmented productivity continues to evolve, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the workforce.
