SAG-AFTRA Strikes Agreement with Studios: Analyzing the Fallout for Entertainment Giants

Published November 10, 2023

After a prolonged strike that lasted over 100 days, the Screen Actors' Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has reached a tentative labor agreement with major Hollywood studios, potentially averting further disruption to an industry already feeling the impacts.

The Strike and Its Implications for Studios

The actors' strike, which saw chants and picket lines outside major studios such as Paramount, has had significant financial and operational consequences for a number of big players in the entertainment sector. Notably, Sony Group Corp. SNEJF, which had to revise its movie unit's fiscal year operating profit forecast downwards, experienced delays in the production and promotion of key film and television content. The delays have pushed back the release of high-profile projects, contributing to a dip in the company's financial outlook.

The cessation of activities during the strike period also led to the postponement of several anticipated movie releases. This includes decisions made back in July when production halted and releases for Marvel Studios collaborations, namely 'Kraven the Hunter' and the next installment of the 'Spider-Verse' series, were deferred. Sony executives foresaw a time-intensive recovery process post-strike, with a return to normal business activities expected to stretch into the subsequent fiscal year.

AMC Entertainment and the Ripple Effects of the Strike

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. AMC, a company headquartered in Leawood, Kansas and engaged in the theatrical business, publically advocated for a resolution between SAG-AFTRA and the studios. The company’s shares stumbled following their earnings report, which highlighted the negative repercussions of the strikes. AMC CEO Adam Aron underscored the challenges imposed by the work stoppages, although the enterprise saw some relief with unexpected successes like the Taylor Swift concert film and Beyoncé's forthcoming feature, which bolstered fourth-quarter numbers despite the industry-wide tumult.

Comcast and Others Feel the Heat

Comcast Holdings Corp. CCZ, alongside other media corporations, endured setbacks amid the stalemate, particularly due to interrupted television production and delivery. Warner Bros. Discovery also reported a downswing in performance, underscored by the hit taken by TV revenues. The prolonged strike threatened to extend its financial impacts into the next year, adding uncertainty to the industry's recovery timeline.

With the tentative agreement now on the table, these companies look forward to mitigating the adverse effects suffered. Cost control measures and strategic planning are being employed to recuperate from the setbacks. However, the full extent of the strike's impact, and the subsequent adjustments to the entertainment industry's complex eco-system, will only unfold over time.
