The Billion-Dollar Dividend King in Buffett's Portfolio

Published July 9, 2024

Warren Buffett's investment conglomerate, Berkshire Hathay, is preparing to amass a sizable sum of approximately $6 billion in dividend income over the forthcoming year. A staggering portion of this income, one-sixth to be precise, is expected to be generated from a single stock, a feat that might surprise those unfamiliar with the investment wizardry of Buffett.

The Lead Contender: Apple Inc. AAPL

When considering the tech dominance and global reach of AAPL, it's often assumed that this giant would stand as Berkshire's leading source of dividends. As the world's largest technology company by revenue and the most valuable since January 2021, AAPL is a behemoth in consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Moreover, occupying the fourth position in both PC and smartphone manufacturing, AAPL is an integral member of the Big Five in the US information technology sector. However, despite these accolades, AAPL is not the stock contributing the lion's share of Buffett's dividend income.

The Stealthy Giant: Bank of America Corp. BAC

Stealing the spotlight is BAC, a titan in the banking sector and Buffett's dividend goldmine. As the second largest banking institution in the US and amongst the top eight worldwide, BAC has cemented its status as a major player. Known for its vast array of services including commercial banking, wealth management, and investment banking, BAC fiercely competes within the Big Four banking institutions of the United States and holds roughly 10% of all US bank deposits.

While AAPL and KO are formidable in their respective domains, and Berkshire Hathaway BRK-A itself is a colossal conglomerate encompassing a spectrum of wholly-owned subsidiaries and significant minority stakes in giants like Kraft Heinz and American Express, it is BAC that stands as Buffett's dividend heavyweight. The strategic holdings in BAC not only showcase Buffett's confidence in the banking sector but also highlight the value of diversification in creating a robust dividend income stream.
