Microsoft Discontinues OneDrive Exit Survey After User Backlash

Published November 10, 2023

In a recent update that caught Microsoft MSFT users by surprise, some found themselves facing an exit survey when attempting to close down the OneDrive application. This unexpected feature was swiftly met with user complaints, ranging from accusations of the tech giant being 'desperate and clingy' to concerns over user autonomy.

User Experience Disrupted

During the brief period between November 1st and 8th, a subset of users experienced a new prompt asking them to explain their reasons for shutting down the OneDrive sync client. Choices included various common grievances such as performance issues or unfamiliarity with the service, but lacked an outright option to decline the questionnaire.

Public Outcry and Quick Reversal

The initiative did not go down well with the public, as shown by the outcry on forums and social media platforms. Microsoft MSFT, in response to the negative feedback, has ceased this approach and reverted to the standard application closing process.

Behind the Survey's Intentions

It seems that Microsoft was using the survey as a tool to understand user dissatisfaction with OneDrive's inflexible file storage system. However, the frustration was already evident on Microsoft community boards where threads about disdain for OneDrive had amassed significant views. The feature also exacerbated ongoing concerns about Microsoft's aggressive promotion of its own services within the Windows ecosystem.

Not Microsoft's First Rodeo

This is not the first instance of Microsoft facing backlash over intrusive features. Similar user experience disruptions have occurred with prompts related to the Microsoft Edge browser, amongst other examples. As the tech giant attempts to shepherd users towards its suite of products, the balance between guidance and force has become a contentious issue.

Microsoft's Market Position and Practices

While Microsoft MSFT remains a titan in the tech industry as part of the Big Five, alongside Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook, the company's practices continue to be scrutinized by users who demand a seamless and respectful user experience. The company's significant role in the tech industry is underscored by its expansive portfolio of software and hardware products.
