Japan Plans to Boost Nuclear Power Post-Fukushima

Published December 17, 2024

Japan is taking a significant step towards increasing its nuclear power capacity, marking a shift from its previous decade-long policy that aimed to decrease reliance on this energy source. Following the catastrophic Fukushima disaster in 2011, the nation had implemented strict regulations and significantly reduced its nuclear power operations.

New Energy Strategy

The Japanese government outlined a new energy strategy aimed at utilizing both nuclear energy and renewable sources to foster growth and reduce carbon emissions. This proposal suggests that nuclear power should account for about 20% of the country’s energy mix by fiscal year 2040, while renewables are projected to contribute between 40% and 50%.

Current Energy Landscape

Last year, more than 60% of Japan's electricity came from coal and natural gas. The introduction of this new strategy indicates a desire to decrease this dependence on fossil fuels. Currently, nuclear energy contributes roughly 8.5% to Japan’s energy mix, while renewable sources accounted for about 23% in fiscal 2023.

Global Context

Many countries are revitalizing their nuclear sectors to ensure energy security and provide a reliable source of emissions-free power. Japan, particularly as the world’s fifth-largest carbon dioxide emitter, has faced scrutiny regarding its sustainability efforts. The revised strategy can potentially enable Japan to enhance its decarbonization initiatives, especially as it works towards new emissions reduction targets.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the ambitious goals, Japan faces obstacles in increasing nuclear output. The country needs to navigate stringent regulations established after the Fukushima incident, along with the necessity of gaining public consent before proceeding with plans to build new reactors.

Looking Forward

With rising power demands, driven by increased electrification and technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, Japan's total electricity generation could rise significantly by 2040. The push towards nuclear energy could pave the way for attracting major tech companies like Google and others interested in utilizing nuclear power for their operations in Japan.
