Lilium Advances Emissions-Free Aviation with InoBat's High-Volume Production of Advanced Battery Cells

Published November 11, 2023

In a significant enhancement of their existing collaboration, Lilium N.V. LILM and InoBat have announced their plans to prepare for the large-scale production of high-performance battery cells for Lilium’s groundbreaking all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Lilium Jet. This strategic partnership is pivotal in propelling Lilium closer to its goal of revolutionizing urban and regional air mobility with a focus on sustainability and innovative technology.

The Partnership Amplification

The recent expansion of the partnership between Lilium, a pioneer in the electric air mobility sector headquartered in Wessling, Germany, and InoBat, a front-runner in customized battery manufacturing, fortifies the foundation for an increase in the production capacity of battery cells essential to the Lilium Jet’s operations. The synergy is further empowered by the backing of Gotion High-Tech, a significant investor in InoBat and among the top 10 battery cell manufacturers globally. Gotion High-Tech is poised to play a supportive role in producing battery cells at InoBat’s facilities located in Voderady, Slovakia, particularly the Volta I and the upcoming Volta II factories. InoBat’s Volta II factory, the company’s first gigafactory, will boast a production capacity of up to 4 GWh, indicating a robust manufacturing capability that aligns with the demands of Lilium’s innovative eVTOL aircraft.

Ground-Breaking Electric Jet Battery Technology

The partnership not only consolidates the manufacturing prowess necessary for Lilium’s Jet but also reflects Lilium’s judicious strategy of engaging multiple sources for battery cell production. This ensures a reliable supply chain and addresses Lilium’s growing battery cell requirements as it gears up for the official service launch of the Lilium Jet and beyond. Tested extensively by third-parties, the prototype Lilium battery cells have exhibited remarkable energy capacity, power, and cycle life, attesting to the advanced nature of this technology. Lilium maintains its intellectual property rights over this battery technology as it charts a course towards eco-friendly aviation with zero operating emissions.

Industry Leaders on Collaborative Efforts

Leaders from Lilium and their partners at InoBat and Gotion High-Tech have expressed mutual satisfaction and optimism about the enduring association and its significant role in ushering in a carbon-neutral future through advanced electric-powered transportation. Both the manufacturing expertise lent by Gotion High-Tech and the vision shared by Lilium and InoBat are crucial elements that aim to ensure the air travel sector benefits from high-volume, high-quality battery cell deliveries catered to meet the anticipated growth of the eVTOL market in Europe.

As Lilium continues to build on its over 800-strong team with about 450 aerospace engineers and an adept leadership, the company remains deeply committed to its mission of providing sustainable and accessible high-speed transportation solutions globally. With its foundational steps firmly rooted in innovative research and strategic partnerships, Lilium is set to make sizeable advancements towards achieving the decarbonization of air travel while offering an unmatched combination of capacity, noise reduction, and high performance with its state-of-the-art Lilium Jet.
