Intel Shares Are On The Rise Today: What's Going On?

Published March 18, 2025

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) saw its shares increase in value on Tuesday, following news of significant changes in leadership and ongoing restructuring efforts led by new CEO Lip-Bu Tan.

What You Need To Know: Reports from Reuters indicate that Tan, who previously served as a board member and was the CEO of Cadence Design Systems, intends to undertake a bold overhaul of Intel's chip design, manufacturing processes, and overall strategy regarding artificial intelligence (AI). His approach includes implementing cost reductions, reshuffling management roles, and intensifying efforts in the production of AI-specific chips. Tan has been critical of the previous CEO Pat Gelsinger, specifically regarding the effectiveness of manufacturing decisions and Intel’s struggles to establish a competitive presence in the AI sector.

A central element of Tan's plan is to reinvigorate Intel's foundry business, which collaborates with clients such as Microsoft and Amazon. In the past, Intel aimed to compete directly with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Nvidia in the AI and semiconductor arenas. However, various challenges, including poor execution and a downturn in the market, resulted in significant losses for the company, amounting to an annual deficit of $19 billion in 2024.

Tan intends to establish a yearly release cycle for AI chips, with the upcoming Panther Lake chips, which are designed using Intel's new 18A process technology, serving as a determining factor for Intel's ability to remain competitive. Despite these ambitious plans, experts caution that it may take years for Intel to develop AI hardware that can truly match Nvidia's leading position in the market.

During an internal meeting, Tan recognized that tough choices must be made to enhance Intel's operational effectiveness. His leadership signals a shift towards more aggressive restructuring while aiming for operational efficiency, contrasting with the company's past strategies.

Current Intel Share Performance: As of the latest update, Intel shares have risen by 1.54%, reaching $26.08.
