How Major US Stock Indexes Fared on December 30, 2024

On December 30, 2024, stocks on Wall Street experienced a decline, ending what has been a strong year for the market on a less favorable note.

The S&P 500 index closed down 1.1% on Monday, dipping by 63.90 points to finish at 5,906.94. Despite this drop, the index remains on track to record its second consecutive annual gain of over 20%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average also fell, losing 1% or 418.48 points, concluding the day at 42,573.73. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq composite saw a decline of 1.2%, down 235.25 points, resulting in a close at 19,486.78.

Shares of major technology companies, including Apple and Microsoft, contributed significantly to the overall market downturn. Additionally, Boeing stock dropped following a tragic incident in South Korea where one of its jets skid off the runway, leading to the loss of 179 lives out of 181 passengers onboard.

Looking at the results for the year, the S&P 500 has increased by 1,137.11 points, or 23.8%. The Dow is up 4,884.19 points, which equals a 13% increase. Additionally, the Nasdaq has surged by 4,475.43 points, or 29.8%. The Russell 2000 index, which represents smaller companies, climbed by 200.70 points, or 9.9%.
