Trump-Linked World Liberty Financial Makes Waves with $15M Ethereum Buy and DeFi Moves

Published January 24, 2025

With Donald Trump’s inauguration now behind us, the United States is poised for numerous policy changes. This includes actions like the recent TikTok ban. Interestingly, the Trump family has also made headlines by acquiring a significant amount of Ethereum (over 4,500 ETH), valued at $15 million. As noted by José Oramas, a specialist from Crypto News Australia, this purchase occurred on January 19, 2025—just a day before Donald Trump's official inauguration ceremony.

This transaction was conducted through a DeFi platform associated with the Trump family called World Liberty Financial (WLF). The platform has emerged as an influential player in the digital asset sphere. Following this acquisition, WLF now holds one of the most substantial crypto portfolios, with its Ethereum wallet surging to around $98 million. This recent purchase has amounted to precisely 4,563 Ether, showcasing WLF's strategy of diversifying its digital assets.

WLF's investment portfolio is not limited to Ethereum alone; the platform has also made notable purchases in other cryptocurrencies. These include Aave (AAVE), Chainlink (LINK), and Tron (TRX), with one highlight being their acquisition of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), which added an impressive $47 million to WLF's digital asset portfolio.

WLF's growth can also be attributed to the support of key figures within the cryptocurrency industry. A vital contributor is Justin Sun, the founder of the Tron Blockchain. Sun significantly bolstered WLF’s reputation by investing $75 million, thereby establishing a noteworthy partnership between the two entities.

Despite these substantial investments, the expected positive impact on the crypto market—particularly Ethereum—has not materialized. Typically, such large investments lead to price surges. However, Ethereum has slightly declined in value instead.

As part of their strategy to enhance their decentralized web presence, the Trump family is making efforts to secure Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domain names. These domains, directly linked to the Trump family, include names like erictrump.eth and barrontrump.eth. ENS provides a user-friendly way to send and receive cryptocurrencies by replacing lengthy wallet addresses with simpler names.

The interest in WLF's offerings continues to grow among significant players in the crypto community. With the recent addition of new tokens, there has been a surge in demand for WFL's native token. In response to this demand, WLF decided to sell 20% of its token supply and plans to release an additional 5% of its tokens for sale following their Ethereum purchase.

However, amidst these developments, many were surprised that Donald Trump did not mention digital assets in his inaugural address. Prior to taking office, Trump spoke about the potential release of Ross Ulbricht, the Silk Road founder, and the establishment of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The absence of these topics in his inaugural speech has raised questions regarding his commitment to prioritizing digital assets.
