Viasat Surpasses Q2 Fiscal 2024 Earnings Expectations with Strong Revenue Growth

Published November 9, 2023

Viasat Inc. VSAT, a global leader in broadband and communications products and services, has delivered a stronger than expected performance in the second quarter of fiscal 2024. The company exceeded earnings projections, buoyed by robust revenue growth across all of its business verticals. Strong demand for Viasat's offerings in commercial air In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) services, mobility terminal shipments and installations, as well as information assurance products drove significant year-over-year revenue increases. However, this accomplishment was somewhat shadowed by a decrease in fixed broadband subscriber numbers.

Financial Performance

The quarter brought both triumphs and challenges for Viasat. While the company posted a net loss of $767.2 million, or $6.16 per share, this was primarily attributable to satellite impairment charges and increased interest expenses. On an adjusted basis excluding one-time items, Viasat realized a non-GAAP net income of $149.7 million, or $1.19 per share, which was a considerable improvement over the previous year's net loss of $13.6 million, or $0.18 per share. This figure comfortably outstripped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.48 per share.

Revenue Insights

For the quarter, Viasat's revenues showed a remarkable increase of 64.5% to $1,225.4 million. This surge was predominantly fueled by a near doubling in Service revenues to $823.7 million and a significant 53.9% increase in Product revenues to $401.7 million, as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The Satellite Services segment demonstrated almost a two-fold revenue growth, benefiting from rising demand in commercial air IFC and a full-quarter contribution from the acquisition of Inmarsat. These strong revenue streams fed into an impressive adjusted EBITDA of $486.3 million, a substantial leap from $188.3 million a year earlier.

Company Segments and Outlook

Viasat's Government Systems segment revealed a double-digit revenue spike due to robust deliveries of information assurance products. With the integration of Inmarsat, Viasat eyes significant growth in both Government Systems and the Commercial Network segments. Meanwhile, a more modest expansion is anticipated in Satellite Services. For fiscal 2024, Viasat projects high single-digit year-over-year revenue growth, aiming for a range of $4.1 to $4.25 billion, and an adjusted EBITDA increase in the mid-single digits.

Peers and Market Position

Competitors in the market also manifest positive trends. Arista Networks, Inc. ANET, renowned for sophisticated network switches conducive to SDN solutions, capitalizes on its diverse portfolio and expectant long-term earnings growth. United States Cellular Corporation USM, a significant full-service wireless carrier in the US, continues to prioritize customer experience and network modernization. Comtech Telecommunications Corp. CMTL stands its ground as a top provider of advanced communication technologies, crafted to optimize satellite network operations and emergency systems. These companies, along with Viasat, each contribute to the vibrant landscape of communications technology, proving the sector's overall health and growth potential.
