A Promising Cryptocurrency Investment According to Tom Lee

Published March 11, 2025

In recent times, few market analysts have been as accurate as Tom Lee from Fundstrat. While many analysts remained pessimistic about the market following a challenging year in 2022, Lee adopted a bullish perspective. His optimistic outlook has allowed him to navigate a market that seems to defy expectations, allowing the broader S&P 500 Index to surpass 6,100 on several occasions in the last few months.

Bitcoin (BTC -2.36%), the leading cryptocurrency, has also seen a significant surge, especially following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election earlier in November. However, in recent weeks, as the market has retracted, Bitcoin and several other cryptocurrencies have surrendered some of their gains. Despite this, Lee maintains a positive stance, predicting that Bitcoin could rise at least 66% by the end of the year.

Expect Bitcoin to Experience Temporary Declines Before a Rally

In recent weeks, Bitcoin has been volatile and has faced declines due to decreased consumer confidence and ongoing trade tensions initiated by Trump. At the beginning of the year, Fundstrat even projected a short-term downturn for Bitcoin after a strong performance, as noted on the RiskReversal podcast, where Lee mentioned:

"Our technical strategist Mark Newton has indicated that Solana, Ethereum, and Bitcoin all show signs of potential downside. His bearish view has been accurate since mid-January, with a downside target of $62,000 for Bitcoin by the end of March."

Overall, Lee is optimistic about Bitcoin, viewing it as a hedge against inflation due to its limited supply. Nevertheless, he considers Bitcoin a risk-on asset that might face difficulties in the short term amid market volatility driven by tariff-related news and escalating trade war risks. Currently, the Trump administration has imposed tariffs of 20% on China and 25% on Mexico and Canada, prompting retaliatory measures from these countries.

Ultimately, Lee does not expect any dips in Bitcoin's value to persist for long, expressing that it is a worthwhile investment for the long run. In a recent CNBC appearance, he predicted Bitcoin could exceed $150,000 this year, suggesting at least a 66% potential increase from its current price levels (as of March 5) within the next ten months.

While Lee didn't delve deeply into his reasoning behind this forecast, he emphasized that technical patterns play a crucial role in his analysis. He also noted that the rising acceptance of Bitcoin, especially among larger institutions, would significantly influence its price trajectory. Lee specifically mentioned that Citadel, a prominent hedge fund and market maker, is contemplating trading Bitcoin.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Citadel is exploring opportunities to act as a market maker for cryptocurrencies, potentially providing liquidity for major retail exchanges such as Coinbase and Binance.

Continuing a Positive Trend

Interestingly, at the year’s start, Lee projected a price target of $250,000 for Bitcoin by 2025, based on the market conditions at that time. He highlighted improvements in regulatory structures under the Trump administration and the potential for the U.S. to establish a strategic crypto reserve, a proposal currently under examination by a working group guided by Trump.

While considering the recent bearish signals and possible catalysts, Lee's projections seem to be unfolding. However, it is essential to approach price targets with caution, particularly with an unstable asset like Bitcoin. Personally, I remain bullish on Bitcoin for the long term due to its growing acceptance and its potential as an inflation hedge. However, prospective buyers should be prepared for volatility and should commit to holding the asset long-term rather than attempting short-term speculative trades.
