XPeng Motors Surpasses Li Auto to Become the Monthly Sales Champion
In the first month of the year, the competitive landscape for new energy vehicle makers witnessed a significant shift. XPeng Motors has surpassed Li Auto to claim the title of monthly sales champion.
On February 1st, XPeng Motors shared its impressive delivery results, revealing it delivered a total of 30,350 vehicles in January. This figure represents a remarkable increase of 268% compared to the same month last year. This notable performance also signifies the third consecutive month where deliveries have exceeded the 30,000 mark. The surge in XPeng's sales is largely attributed to the success of two new models currently on the market: the MONA and the P7+. The MONA model, in particular, achieved over 15,000 deliveries for the second month in a row, while the P7+ has garnered over 20,000 deliveries since its launch two months ago.
In a close race, Li Auto fell just short of XPeng Motors, delivering 29,927 new vehicles in January. This led to Li Auto losing its top-selling status, which it had held for several months. As of January 31st, Li Auto's total cumulative delivery volume reached 1,163,799 units.
Another player in the market, Leapmotor, reported delivering 25,170 vehicles in January, marking a growth rate of 105%. The company recently announced it had achieved net profitability one year ahead of schedule, reaching its goal of quarterly profitability in the fourth quarter of 2024. This achievement secures Leapmotor's position as the second company in the new energy vehicle sector to attain profitability.
In January, Xiaomi also made significant strides, with the SU7 model delivering over 20,000 vehicles for the fourth consecutive month. The founder and CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, disclosed during a live broadcast on January 25 that total deliveries for the SU7 have surpassed 150,000 units. The company has set an ambitious annual delivery target of 300,000 units for its vehicles in 2025.
Meanwhile, NIO reported delivering 13,863 new cars in January, reflecting an increase of 37.9% year-on-year. Among this total, the NIO brand accounted for 7,951 deliveries, while the ONVO brand contributed 5,912 vehicles.
Other established brands within the new energy sector also posted notable numbers in January. VOYAH delivered 8,009 vehicles, showing a year-on-year growth of 14%, while Avita recorded sales of 8,826 units, achieving a growth rate exceeding 25%. Zeekr managed to deliver 11,942 vehicles, and GAC AION reported global sales of 14,393 units.
It is important to note that due to the Spring Festival holiday, many emerging electric vehicle manufacturers experienced a month-on-month decline in sales compared to December. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers highlighted that January 2025 had 19 working days, which were three days fewer than both January of the previous year and December. This shortened working month is typical as the industry often begins its holiday early before the Spring Festival, leading to reduced effective production and sales time during January.
