CES 2025: A Glimpse into the Future of Technology

Published January 6, 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), recognized as the most impactful tech event globally, is set to begin this week in Las Vegas.

This multi-day event, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, will showcase a wide range of the latest gadgets and technological advancements from various industries, including personal tech, transportation, healthcare, sustainability, and more. As seen in previous years, artificial intelligence (AI) will be a prominent theme throughout the show.

According to the CTA, CES 2024 attracted over 138,000 attendees, and a similar turnout is expected for this year's event. More than 4,500 exhibitors, including around 1,400 startups, will occupy around 2.5 million net square feet of exhibition space.

Gary Shapiro, CEO and vice chair of the CTA, shared that the event is an opportunity for individuals focused on solving significant global challenges to come together. He mentioned, "These are the people getting together, focusing on solving some of the world’s biggest problems — and magic occurs."

CES will draw participants from around the world, with an expected 50,000 international attendees. Major companies like Nvidia, Delta Air Lines, Honda, Volvo, Panasonic, and L’Oréal will also showcase their innovations.

This year may introduce enhanced security measures due to a recent incident involving a tragic event in which a soldier shot himself in a Tesla Cybertruck with explosives before it exploded outside a nearby hotel in Las Vegas. Shapiro noted that while there will be some modest changes for safety, he could not provide further specific details.

Innovations and Themes at CES 2025

At CES 2025, attendees can anticipate remarkable advancements in technology with a focus on key themes that are vital for humanity's future. With over 4,000 companies displaying their innovations spread across extensive exhibit space, solutions for essential human needs like access to food, clean air, clean water, and healthcare technology will be presented.

This year, there will also be a stronger emphasis on technology for individuals with disabilities. These products, which gained significant attention in previous editions, are expected to feature even more prominently at this event.

AI Trends to Monitor at the Event

Artificial intelligence will continue to play a crucial role at CES, influencing nearly every area of technology. Major exhibitors are expected to showcase various applications of AI, focusing on personalization for consumers and boosting productivity for businesses.

For example, computer manufacturers will introduce products that emphasize personalized features. Additionally, AI's role in mobility will expand beyond vehicles, affecting all sorts of machinery, including agricultural equipment from companies like Caterpillar and John Deere.

Government Oversight of Exhibited Products

The tech industry generally welcomes government regulation to ensure safety standards, clarifying what is considered unsafe. However, there is ongoing concern that excessive government control could stifle innovation.

Potential Impact of Tariffs on Consumer Products

As policies from the incoming Trump administration are anticipated to favor business and innovation, tariffs on foreign goods could have significant consequences. Such tariffs could lead to price increases ranging from 30% to 50% for common consumer electronics like PCs, smartphones, and tablets, making them less accessible.

Safety Precautions Following Recent Events

CES has always prioritized safety and has collaborated with various officials for proper planning. While some minor adjustments will be made in light of recent events, the focus remains on maintaining a secure environment.

Additional Security Requests by Attending Companies

Despite recent tragedies, companies are eager to attend CES. Any requests for heightened security from corporations have been relatively few.

Having executives attend in person is significant, especially after COVID-19. The in-person networking that occurs at trade shows like CES is essential for fostering important business connections and collaboration.
