Addressing the Equity Issues in the PR Industry: Spotlight on Black-Owned Agencies
The public relations industry is not immune to the pervasive challenges of inequality, particularly when it comes to Black-owned PR agencies. When examining firms in this sector, it becomes evident that issues such as scaling up and client acquisition are not merely operational concerns but are tied to wider systemic disparities. Clorissa Wright-Thomas, who stands at the helm of Synergy PR Services, an Atlanta-based firm, has not only observed these issues but has also faced them directly as a Black PR professional. Despite navigating an environment that's fraught with obstacles, Wright-Thomas and others like her are advocating for change and proposing actionable solutions.
Identifying the Disparities
For Black-owned PR agencies, the market presents unique challenges. Conventional pathways for growth and client engagement are often closed off due to a lack of resources, networks, or visibility, resulting from long-standing biases and marginalization within the industry.
