Amazon Scales Back DEI Programs Following Industry Trend

Published January 10, 2025

Amazon has recently decided to reduce some of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, according to reports from Bloomberg. This move comes shortly after Meta announced its own decision to end several diversity initiatives.

In an internal memo addressed to employees, Amazon expressed intentions to phase out outdated programs and materials as part of a comprehensive review. The memo, sent by Candi Castleberry, a senior executive in human resources, highlighted the shift in focus towards programs that have demonstrated positive outcomes. Castleberry emphasized the company's goal of nurturing a genuinely inclusive culture.

With this decision, Amazon joins a growing list of companies like Meta and Microsoft that are starting to retract previous commitments to DEI initiatives. Reports indicate that Amazon has also made changes to its corporate website to downplay its emphasis on DEI efforts. Additionally, a post from 2021 that showcased a commitment to these initiatives has been removed.

This trend among tech companies appears to be influenced by an anticipated presidential administration that may not favor DEI programs, further motivating these organizations to reassess their strategies.
